WordPress Plug-ins Roundup

By March 8, 2011March 30th, 2011Blog

Below are some of the WordPress plug-ins I use all the time. I’m mainly posting them here so I never forget their names because of the thousands of plug-ins to choose from in the WordPress add plug-in search box. But as a side note, I thought I would share them with the world, as they are extremely useful for WordPress site administrators, too. The compatibility notes are as of March 2011, so you may need to check for updated versions upon installation.

WordPress Database Backup
(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
Obviously, it backs up your WordPress database according to a set schedule and either emails it to you or can back it up to another directory.

Exclude Pages From Navigation
(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
Sometimes you just need a page that’s only accessed by a link on another page and is not part of the navigation in any way. This plug-in is awesome for that kind of thing.

My Snippets
(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
My favorite plug-in of all time. If your theme only has one standard sidebar widget area, but you need different content on all your pages’ sidebars, then this is for you.

Contact Form 7 – Easy
(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
Contact Form 7 can manage multiple contact forms, plus you can customize the form and the mail contents flexibly with simple markup. The form supports Ajax-powered submitting, CAPTCHA, Akismet spam filtering and so on.

Gravity Forms – Learning Curve
(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
The top of the class in form management. There is a learning curve, but it is fully programmable and supports AJAX, CAPTCHA, file uploads, easy theming, landing pages, custom notifications and a slew of awesome features. Overkill for the average user.

(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
Adds “better” page navigation to your blogs and portfolio pages.

(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
Spam protection for your blogs comments. Requires registration for an API key, but is easy to register and set up. It’s also included by default in your WordPress installation.

Trim Admin Interface and Adminimize
(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
These two plug-ins are great for admins of clients’ WordPress sites. Use these to hide the WordPress-related verbiage, the dashboard, as well as the WordPress updates—everything you wouldn’t want a client to see.

Fluency Admin
(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
Fluency Admin boosts the WordPress admin interface with a new style and cool features. This plug-in allows total customization and re-branding of the admin area. Used with Adminimize and Trim Admin Interface, you can offer clients a fully customized and branded CMS.

Blog in Blog
(WordPress 2.9 compatible, but works in 3.1)
Exclude specified category posts from the main blog feed. With the use of a short code you can add the category to its own page to create a new blog page.

w3 Total Cache
(WordPress 3.0.5 compatible, but I haven’t found any issues in 3.1)
WP Super Cache
(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
WP-Cache 2
(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
These three all do basically the same thing. They cache your WordPress PHP pages as HTML files and serve those up instead, significantly speeding up page-load times.

Pop-Up Domination with SEOPressor
(WordPress 3.0.5 compatible, not tested in 3.1)
Do you like to have some random ad or message pop-up when visitors first come to your website or when viewing random pages? If so, you should be shot. Then this plug-in is for you. Each page is fully customizable and has ad tracking and re-direct capabilities.

Vipers Video Quicktags
(WordPress 3.0.5 compatible, but I haven’t found any issues in 3.1)
Tired of copying and pasting the embed HTML from sites like YouTube? Then this plug-in is for you. Just click one of the new buttons that this plug-in adds to the write screen (rich editor included) and then paste the video’s URL into the prompt box. You can fully configure how the videos are displayed (width, height, colors, alignment on the page) and much more. Your site will even stay (X)HTML valid, unlike with the code provided by most video sites.

Currently supports these video sites:

  • YouTube (including playlists)
  • Google Video
  • DailyMotion
  • Vimeo
  • Veoh
  • Viddler
  • Metacafe
  • Blip.tv
  • Flickr Videos
  • Spike.com/IFILM
  • MySpaceTV

As well as these file types:

  • Flash Video Files (FLV)
  • QuickTime (MOV, etc.)
  • Generic Video Files (AVI, MPEG, WMV, etc.)

Google Analyticator
(WordPress 3.1 compatible)
Google Analyticator adds the necessary JavaScript code to enable Google Analytics to log onto any WordPress blog. This eliminates the need to edit your template code to begin logging. Google Analyticator also includes several widgets for displaying Analytics data in the admin and on your blog.
